- <p> Retired Los Angeles police chief DARYL GATES thinks most people
- don't understand how law enforcement works. Now heUs found an
- action-oriented forum to teach them. Sierra On-Line, a computer
- software firm, recruited the controversial ex-cop to help design
- one of its Police Quest computer games. For a plot in which
- police track down a serial killer, Gates showed the actor who
- served as model for the on-screen detective how to hold a gun
- properly. He also briefed the game designers on procedures for
- bringing in suspects--presumably without a Rodney King-style
- shellacking. Even for an experienced officer, playing the finished
- game was no easy assignment. "I got lost in the details a few
- times," says Gates. "I would recommend it to budding detectives."
