  18. <p>     Retired Los Angeles police chief DARYL GATES thinks most people
  19. don't understand how law enforcement works. Now heUs found an
  20. action-oriented forum to teach them. Sierra On-Line, a computer
  21. software firm, recruited the controversial ex-cop to help design
  22. one of its Police Quest computer games. For a plot in which
  23. police track down a serial killer, Gates showed the actor who
  24. served as model for the on-screen detective how to hold a gun
  25. properly. He also briefed the game designers on procedures for
  26. bringing in suspects--presumably without a Rodney King-style
  27. shellacking. Even for an experienced officer, playing the finished
  28. game was no easy assignment. "I got lost in the details a few
  29. times," says Gates. "I would recommend it to budding detectives."
